In the outskirts of the city of Northbend, Washington, just a short drive to the East of Seattle, the region’s healthy amount of precipitation is turned into music.
Through a project led by the City of Seattle, the Cedar River Watershed gardens encapsulate the serene beauty and environment of the wet climate with a simple and elegant rain garden landscape. The site, nestled on the shore of Rattlesnake Ridge and in the shadow of Rattlesnake Ridge is truly a stunning visual and auditory experience.
Local artist Dan Corson was commissioned to design and build the functioning exhibit featuring a precise irrigation system and a set of drums, carefully placed amid native plantings and wetlands. Each drum has a different tone and set under dripping water.
With the system functioning at full capacity, a memorable beat is created. During the Spring and early Summer, the calls of tree frogs may accompany the beat of the dripping water in composing a natural and relaxing symphony.
