Her claims that the contemporary newsroom is tainted by a relentless and damaging agenda and dominated a pervading ideology conducive to left of center policy in suffocating the founding tenets of journalism, are the root cause of a disturbing epidemic afflicting newsrooms. The irony is that Abramson was part of the problem, even before the incessant blue wave of anti-Trump content circulated through an insidious cyclone of print, electronic, and broadcast drivel in bombarding the audience with subjective decadence.
Interestingly enough, the core audience of the Times grew exponentially during the early stages of the Trump administration and the ceaseless criticism of the president, as online subscriptions ballooned by a staggering 300%. The notion that “if it leads, it bleeds”, and “hate sells”, is a testament to the gold rush magnitude fortunes of the media empire.
As Abramson and her ilk generate lucrative monetary sums in speaking engagements and book tours based on the obvious premise that the mainstream press has devolved into a one-sided creature in purveying divisive hate with roots in dystopian fiction, half of the nation is in “a wait and see mode” to the breadth of newsroom dignitaries and decision makers who choose to cross the imaginary line in the faux-criticism of industry policy, as 2020 fast approaches. The disingenuous actions are not treasonous, but certainly shady in fueling the flames of controversy as the Democrats once again control hold a majority in Congress, and the reign of Nancy Pelosi takes on another twist and turn.
While the pendulum has certainly swung to the safe moderate harbor of sensibility for certain cagey media veterans in forcibly indicting active colleagues and news entities as biased, when the forthcoming insufferable reality is restored of a screaming chorus of sirens from the left lambasting clear thinking and decent Americans, will the immaculate memory of the internet include the prevarications of Abramson and company exist within the search engine ledger? In all likelihood, the collective short-term cognitive dissonance unleashed by instant gratification will organically bury all related content thirty or forty pages deep on any viable search, and the 15 minute news cycle of the social networks will thoroughly complete the task of amending history.
As the definition of accountability is hijacked by enablement made possible by a digital nightmare, the truth becomes unstably subjective, a plight that threatens the basic principles of the republic. Unfortunately, the tech culture has society in a vicious sleeper hold, and the mouthpiece of professional communicators cements the challenges facing individuals in adapting to an intrepid future shock.
