Nearly three-fourths of Democrats are convinced the U.S. has become a “fascist dictatorship” but a new Rasmussen survey also says two-thirds of Republicans and more than half of Independents disagree.
This survey grew from a remark by liberal commentator Elie Mystal, who asserted, “We live in a fascist dictatorship.” She declared a constitutional crisis. Evidently, 72 percent of Democrats agree.
However, 63 percent of Republicans and 53 percent of Independents apparently don’t believe it.
Rasmussen published the results of their poll Monday. The survey was taken from among 1,061 likely voters April 15-17. It has a +/- 3 percentage point sampling error and a 95 percent level of confidence.
According to Rasmussen, “Despite the ‘fascist dictatorship’ talk, the president remains more trusted than either Congress or the judiciary. Forty-one percent (41%) of voters trust Trump more to protect the rights and interests of the American people, while 13% trust Congress more and 33% trust the federal courts.”
There is more, and it reveals the continuing philosophical gap between Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Rasmussen is reporting, “Seventy-three percent (73%) of Republicans trust Trump more to protect the rights and interests of the American people, as do 17% of Democrats and 35% of unaffiliated voters. Forty-seven percent (47%) of Democrats, 13% of Republicans and 38% of unaffiliated voters put more trust in the federal courts. Just 18% of Democrats, eight percent (8%) of Republicans and 12% of unaffiliated voters say they trust Congress more to protect the rights and interests of the American people.”
Meanwhile, “65% of Republicans, 40% of Democrats and 48% of unaffiliated voters believe the constitutional system of checks and balances is currently working at least somewhat effectively,” Rasmussen reported.
What exactly is fascism? According to Wikipedia, fascism is “characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.”
It also “views forms of violence including political violence, imperialist violence, and war as means to national rejuvenation. Fascists often advocate for the establishment of a totalitarian one-party state…”
Rasmussen’s daily presidential tracking poll has President Donald Trump losing ground among the electorate. The poll for Monday “shows that 47% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove.”
“The latest figures include 32% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 42% who Strongly Disapprove,” Rasmussen said. “This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -10.”
