Pyeongchang 2018: Vonn Medals, But Should We Be Proud?

February 21, 2018 By Conn Williamson

Lindsey Vonn is arguably one of the greatest downhill skiers in the history of the sport. There is absolutely no doubt about the fearless talent, the courageous drive in overcoming multiple debilitating injuries and the sheer illuminating presence of a Hollywood blonde bombshell.

However, the legendary icon of the alpine summits, made the conscientious decision to enter the dark and foreboding underworld of controversial politics, in joining the putrid ranks of public figures, who are blatantly vocal in sharing their desire to rebuke any presidential invitation to the White House. The plethora of arrogance and hypocrisy is a sickening combination of just how far society fallen into the realm of juvenile ideology perpetuated by detractors from both sides of the political spectrum.

Vonn’s Olympic farewell tour concluded with a bittersweet bronze medal finish in the women’s downhill final Wednesday, as the legend came up a few precious tenths of a second short to winner, Italian Sogia Goggia, and culminated a roller coaster week in South Korea, which featured a Twitter war with insane trolls mocking her disappointing performance in the Super G.

While her decision go public in refusing a possible invitation from President Trump if she had earned the gold, incensed certain Twitter users to an absolutely disturbing and deplorable feeding frenzy of heated insanity in taking pride with her failure to medal last Saturday, her actions did not merit such harsh treatment. Fox News reports that Julie Foudy, a former member of the US national women’s soccer team, decided to come to the defense of Vonn in the crazed maelstrom and battle of tweets. Unfortunately, Foudy crossed the line in labeling all of the trolls as “Trump supporters”.

While the ungraceful social networking display had no effect on Vonn’s political stance, the debate remains, whether or not Americans should display pride in an athlete, who obviously does not grasp the perspective that the honor of meeting the President is just not about her, but about representing fellow citizens, who are never afforded the rare opportunity to be a part of history.
