The Biden White House has reportedly scheduled several events this week, according to USA Today, which reported the events are being coordinated by the recently-established Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
The newspaper noted the week “coincides with Black History Month, and the activities will culminate Friday with a White House ceremony honoring 31 graduates from the first class of students from the University of Chicago Crime Lab Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy. That event will be hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris, the newspaper said.
By remarkable coincidence, the Second Amendment Foundation began airing its updated 60-second message regarding President Biden’s renewed gun control efforts.
Probably by no coincidence, USA Today is offering something of a “voter guide” on how presidential candidates stand on various issues, including crime and policing. There are few hints about how various candidates approach gun control versus gun rights questions.
Joe Biden, the article says, “has often called on Congress to reinstate a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.” What isn’t mentioned is Biden’s half-century of being a gun control advocate inside the Beltway. On Capitol Hill, he supported or even championed restrictive gun control measures including the semi-auto ban. He also admitted on live television that he would like to ban the sale of 9mm handguns.
Donald Trump is said to support “increased powers for police.” But there is nothing about his position on the Second Amendment, then importance of which he habitually mentions in his rally speeches. Trump’s federal court appointments, including three conservative Supreme Court justices, suggest he would be far less inclined to sign gun control legislation than Biden.
When Nikki Haley was governor of South Carolina, she announced on social media she had received a 9mm pistol from her husband for Christmas. There was nothing about that in the USA Today profile paragraph, which noted she had “sought policies that…hold district attorneys accountable for prosecuting according to the law and get ‘illegal guns off the streets.’” It also says she “opposed gun reforms and argues that she does not trust the government with enacting red flaw laws, which allow law enforcement to temporarily confiscate firearms under court order from people deemed dangerous.”

Robert F. Kennedy, a lifelong Democrat now running as an Independent, is described as a person favoring training police in “de-escalation techniques and mediation skills.” USA Today says he wants police to “focus on serious crimes instead of targeting a larger pool of Americans.”
