A recently-surfaced video showing Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)—who was supported by the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, Giffords and other gun control groups—admitting that passage of the SAVE America act would make it tough for Democrats to win elections is going viral since appearing on Fox News.
The video was reportedly “unearthed” by Breitbart News. It was recorded the day after the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act was rejected by the Senate in June, 50-48 with four Republicans jumping ship to join Democrats, who voted against it. The four defectors were identified by Fox as Sens. Susan Collins, (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski, (R-Alaska), Mitch McConnell, (R-Ky)., and Thom Tills, (R-N.C.).
In her remarks, Slotkin tells a cheering audience, “It would be hard for any Democrat in any state to win any election.”
The comment reportedly has Republicans declaring she just said “the quiet part out loud.”
The SAVE America Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship in order to vote. Critics said it would disenfranchise married women whose names did not match their birth certificates, and minorities who allegedly wouldn’t be able to get copies of birth certificates.
President Donald Trump, who strongly supports the SAVE America Act, declared during his February State of the Union address that Democrats oppose the measure because “the only way they can get elected is to cheat.”

Fox News reported the Center for Election Innovation & Research “has found that voter registration of noncitizens is rare.”
Slotkin apparently provided no proof that passage of the SAVE Act would impair the ability of Democrats to win elections. But her remark is now out there, and it is garnering lots of attention.
When Slotkin ran in 2024 for the Senate seat, Everytown extolled her gun control record in a news release.
“When a state like Michigan, with its long tradition of hunting, elects a gun sense champion like Elissa Slotkin, it’s clear the politics around gun safety have undergone a seismic shift,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Everytown made sure Michigan voters knew that Mike Rogers opposed common-sense gun safety laws — and now we’ll work with Senator-elect Slotkin on new measures to keep guns out of dangerous hands.”
“Elissa Slotkin is a proven leader on our issue, from championing secure storage initiatives to advocating for background checks,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “Our movement has made incredible progress in Michigan over the last few years because voters there have made it clear they want an end to America’s gun violence crisis. We’re excited to keep building on this momentum with Senator-elect Slotkin by our side.”
“Senator-elect Slotkin has a record of standing with Gen Z in our fight to prevent gun violence, and now she’ll have an even bigger platform to push for common-sense gun safety laws in the Senate,” said Rebekah Schuler, a survivor of the 2021 mass shooting at Oxford High School and volunteer leader with Students Demand Action from Michigan. “For those of us who’ve experienced the trauma of gun violence firsthand, we know how important it is to have leaders at the national level putting our safety over the gun lobby’s agenda. Her victory is a reminder that when we vote, we save lives.”
