Chicago Breaks Tragic Record: 700 Dead So Far This Year By Guns

The windy city has once again broken a disturbing record. They have reached 700 homicides so far this year. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years the number of murders has been this high in Chicago, and we’re still counting.

#1 In Murder And Gang Violence

Joseph Anderson, a black man who was shot in the face, was the city’s 700th murder for 2016. Among the other victims this weekend: Jovan Wilson, the 15-year-old grandson of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis. Wilson was shot during a home invasion and an argument over gym shoes on Friday, the Daily Caller is reporting.

The homicide rate in Chicago has skyrocketed this year. The last time the city saw more than 700 murders in a single year was in 1998, when there were 703.

And the year’s not even over.

The city started 2016 with 51 homicides and 272 gunshot victims in January. The number of homicides in January doubled in two years. January 2014 had 20 homicides, while January 2015 had 29 murders.

During one weekend in February, there were six homicides and 14 shootings.

In August, there were 90 homicides, the highest single month of murder in almost 20 years.

On Labor day, 13 people were killed and another 52 injured from gun violence.

Remember – this is in a city with some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.

This mayhem affects the Black community in Chicago at much higher rates than whites. The murder rate in the black community in 2005 was eight times higher than in the white community. In 2015, the black community had homicide rates 18 times higher than the white community.

So far, the police have officially reported only 654 homicides, but that’s because they don’t count acts of self-defense, fatal shootings on interstate highways or accidental shootings. The department only counts what it officially calls “first-degree murder.”

Cases that are defined by the FBI as “the willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another. The classification of this offense is based solely on police investigation as opposed to the determination of a court, medical examiner, coroner, jury, or other judicial body.”

The tragedy is that city leaders are doubling down on their failed gun control policies and demanding even more restrictions on guns, leaving innocent people even more defenseless to this senseless violence.
