Big Disappointment: Politicians and Press Get Low Poll Ratings

May 15, 2025 By Dave Workman

Congress is not terribly popular with many voters, a new Rasmussen poll finds.  ( U.S. Capitol OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA, Wikicommons)

Capitol Hill and the establishment press can’t get a break from a public which dislikes or is at least disappointed with them all, according to the results of two recent Rasmussen surveys conducted earlier this month.

Both reports might underscore why the nation’s gun owners are particularly perturbed, and why they have a lot of company.

According to a Rasmussen poll on Congress, only 33 percent of likely voters consider senators and representatives to be doing good or excellent work. Perhaps the good news for politicians is that this number is actually up from the dismal 15 percent reported in March 2024, but that was while Democrats were still in control of the U.S. Senate.

According to Rasmussen, “Among voters who rate Congress as doing a poor job, 49% Strongly Agree with the quote from (Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor) Greene” that “Republicans in Congress are not delivering on the mandate given to them by the American people.”

“Majorities of every political category – 65% of Democrats, 60% of Republicans and 57% of voters not affiliated with either major party – at least somewhat agree with that ‘Republicans in Congress are not delivering,’” Rasmussen said.

The survey was taken May 6-8 from among 1,047 likely voters nationwide.

If you think that was a tough critique, a Rasmussen survey conducted May 1 and 4-5 among 1,072 likely voters revealed a disdain for the news media, with nearly half of respondents saying the media is biased in favor of Democrats.

Specifically, Rasmussen is reporting that, “47% of Likely U.S. Voters say that, in terms of their political coverage, most news media organizations are biased in favor of Democrats.”

“Just 23% believe the media are biased in favor of Republicans,” Rasmussen detailed, “while 19% think most of the media are pretty much objective and neutral in their political coverage and 10% are not sure. Last October, 50% said the media were biased in favor of Democrats.”

Bringing the numbers into a tighter focus, Rasmussen said “Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Republicans, 43% of Democrats and 41% of unaffiliated voters think most news media organizations are biased in favor of Democrats.”

The report went on to note, “Fifty-one percent (51%) of Republicans, 46% of Democrats and 49% of unaffiliated voters say the problem of bias in the news media is getting worse.”

Meanwhile, a third Rasmussen poll finds “46% of Likely U.S. Voters trust Republicans more to handle national security issues, while 42% trust Democrats more and 12% are not sure. This finding is essentially unchanged since April 2023, when the GOP led Democrats by a 45% to 41% margin on this issue.”

“However,” Rasmussen reported, “Democrats have gained significantly on the question of who voters trust more to handle taxes, now tied with Republicans at 45%, with another 10% not sure. In December 2023, Republicans led by five points (45% to 40%) on this question. The GOP had been trusted more on the tax issue in every survey since 2013.”
