Apparently, life does exist in the ocean near the New York metroplex.
A group of researchers and scientists are claiming that they have discovered a Great White Shark birthing site off the tip of Long Island. The site, near Montauk, is thought to be the first observed in the North Atlantic, and provides a solution for the overpopulation issues in maximum security prisons in the Empire State.
Team members from the organization Ocearch utilized GPS tagging strategies on mature specimens in hopes of locating a the ocean equivalent of a den. The claim is that by locating the most vulnerable individuals in a population, the species composed of cartilage skeletons can receive better protection efforts, including the adoption of a slough of rigorous environmental sanctions on the fishing, shipping and industrial industries. Great Whites (Carcharodon carcharias) can reach speeds of 25 mph in short bursts.
While most swimmers and water enthusiasts in the area will now be wary of the heightened possibility of an attack thanks to the “Jaws” movie series as well as the dramatic portrayal of the sharks thanks to the media, the Asian fin market is on high alert as the chief ingredient in shark soup demands nearly $900 per pound.
