Turnabout: GOP Senator Seeks Ban That Will Anger Liberals

In politics, turnabout is fair play and there is a big issue popular among some liberals that has just been targeted by a Republican state senator sure to cause as much angst for “progressives” as a proposed ban on so-called “assault weapons” has alarmed Second Amendment advocates.

State Sen. Mark Miloscia (R-Federal Way) has just introduced legislation that would ban safe-injection sites for heroin users.

According to the Seattle Times, Miloscia said in a news release that the state should not be “facilitating drug use.”

This comes a couple of weeks after legislation was unveiled to ban semiautomatic modern sporting rifles and some semi-auto handguns, and even certain semi-auto .22-caliber rimfire rifles with fixed magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. That legislation has support from State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, a Democrat.

Instead of providing safe places to shoot up, Miloscia would have local elected officials concentrate on treatment in order to get people off drugs. In a prepared statement quoted by the newspaper, Miloscia put it bluntly: “Standing idly by while addicts abuse illegal drugs is not compassionate, and it does not solve the problem.”

KIRO noted that Vancouver, B.C. “is home to the only safe injection site in North America.”

The station also noted that the King County Heroin Crisis Task Force has suggested creating two “safe injection” sites, in Seattle and outside the city.

The irony is that having firearms is mentioned in both the state and federal constitutions, while shooting heroin is not.
