Guinness Book of World Records holder Cem Karaby knows diving. The 44-year-old Turkish “aquaman” reached the pages of the record books after and amazing three day dive in 20 feet of Mediterranean Sea water.
Karaby was buckled down in scuba gear and survived the extended stay under the sea with just minor bloating of the face as a result of his 72 plus hour excursion in the temperate salt water.
During his record setting performance, it is believed that Karaby and support colleagues played in the first ever underwater football match. There is no word yet to who won the match or what the score was. When spending hours in the ocean depths one does have the luxury of time. The modified “field” resembles an ultimate fighting ring with a single goal and net and the ball is regulation size, which requires some major skill when navigating the currents, fish and physical realities of higher pressures.
As Turkey has appeared in only two World Cups, Karaby’s version of sea soccer may give hope to fans that miracles are possible beneath the sea.
