As the nation celebrates Independence Day, former President Donald Trump has widened his lead over Joe Biden in the aftermath of last week’s disastrous debate, and a new report shows Vice President Kamala Harris actually scoring higher than her boss.
Fox News is reporting that Trump ‘now tops Biden 49%-43% among likely voters nationwide,” following the debate, leading to multiple reports that some top Democrats have quietly encouraged the president to step aside and end his re-election campaign.
According to a New York Times/Siena College poll, 74 percent of Americans say Biden, at age 81, is simply too old for the office, and by a 61-23 percent margin, the majority believes Trump bested Biden in the debate. The same poll, however, says 53 percent of Americans do not believe Trump has the temperament for another term in the Oval Office.
Yahoo News is reporting that Biden “told a key ally that he knows he may not be able to salvage his candidacy if he cannot convince the public in the coming days that he is up for the job after a disastrous debate performance last week.”
The Biden campaign insists the president has no intention of dropping out of the race after he huddled with his family over the weekend.
Another revelation in the Yahoo News report was that “A CBS News poll released Wednesday morning showed (Trump) edging ahead of Biden since the debate with 50% to 48% nationally and 51% to 48% in battleground states.”
Meanwhile, in a development that many just didn’t believe possible, The Hill is reporting that Vice President Harris has improved her numbers in a new CNN poll. This poll shows Harris with 45 percent support from registered voters, while Biden only garnered 43 percent support in a hypothetical match-up with Trump, should Biden step aside. Trump polled at 47 percent.
Amid these different polls—all of which show Biden losing ground with the election just over four months away—Rasmussen’s Daily Presidential Tracking Poll still shows Biden with support from 43 percent of likely voters approving of his job performance while 56 percent disapprove. The numbers break down further, with 26 percent “strongly approving” Biden’s performance and 47 percent “strongly disapproving.”
Biden’s dismal performance during the debate has led some to speculate about another candidate who allegedly is more popular than Trump: former First Lady Michelle Obama, according to Fox News. In a Reuters/Ipsos survey, Michelle Obama leads Trump 50-39 percent in a “hypothetical matchup.” The former First Lady has already said she is not interested in running.
