Polls: Can the Establishment Media be Trusted?

September 26, 2019 By Dave Workman

A new Rasmussen survey suggests confidence in the New York Times has slipped. Is the media suffering a credibility problem?

A new Gallup survey says “Americans remain largely mistrustful of the mass media” and that the degree of trust has slipped with only 41 percent of the people having a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in newspapers.

And a new Rasmussen survey says only one-in-three voters think the New York Times “gets it completely right most of the time.”

Liberty Park Press readers can weigh in below, in the Comments section, with their thoughts:

  • Do you trust the establishment media?
  • Do you think the establishment media is biased against (a) Donald Trump, (b) Guns, (c) Conservatives/Republicans?
  • Do you think Barack Obama was treated better by the media than Trump?
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton was treated better?
  • Which news agency do you prefer, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS?

But can you even trust the way these survey results are being reported, and is the press more trustworthy then the surveys suggest? Or less? Does it depend upon whether you may agree with what’s being reported in terms of political partisanship?

Gallup notes in its report, “Republicans’ trust is still at a very low level and a wide gap in views of the media among partisans persists as 69% of Democrats say they have trust and confidence in it, while 15% of Republicans and 36% of independents agree.”

And Rasmussen’s report about the NY Times says this: “Among those who read the Times, only 33% think most stories it reports are usually accurate. Another 34% say they are often accurate. But 25% say most stories in the New York Times are seldom accurate, while three percent (3%) believe they are never accurate.”

This translates to 67 percent of Rasmussen respondents who read the NY Times thinking that the newspaper gets it right most of the time, while only 25 percent think the newspaper is “seldom accurate” and another three percent saying the old Grey Lady is never accurate.

All of this leads to the current controversy over allegations regarding the president and his phone call to the Ukrainian president, and the launch of an impeachment inquiry, which many believe the Democrats have wanted since the day Trump took office.

So, the final question: Are the establishment media part of the solution, or part of the problem?
