After an arduous and emotionally taxing week, the demand for good news in Texas is sorely needed. In a bizarre and uplifting twist of stereotypes and societal roles, inmates at a state prison managed to break out of a holding cell and ultimately save a guard’s life on June 23.
The sentry collapsed in plain sight of of eight prisoners shackled in an adjacent room and as their calls for help went unnoticed, the men decided to act. The group managed to remove the restraints and reach the unconscious guard, who was showing no vital signs, according to prison officials. The men were able to call for emergency medical assistance on the man’s radio. Miraculously, the guard survived after responding to CPR and a defibrillator.
The obligatory question is inundated with disconcerting notions and revolves around the kernel concept of how easily the prisoners were able to extract themselves from a restrained holding cell with minimum effort and in a short period of time. Also, in reverence to The Shawshank Redemption and Escape from Alcatraz– How in the universe does a minute scrap of amiability exist between prisoners and guards?
