After fielding thousands of complaints from sailors, the US Navy made a wise decision to scrap an ominous heap of policy that would have altered the traditional hierarchical ranking system for its honorable enlistees. Disturbing thoughts of irregular roll calls bellowing from loudspeakers across the vast expanse of air craft carriers with the words “air woman” and “polymedic” can safely dissipate into the realm of dreamless fiction.
Fox News notes that the original plan launched in September to eliminate and replace ranking terms such as “constructionman” and “legalman” with gender-neutral titles was in direct response to a Pentagon directive granting women access to all combat job openings. Proponents of the now obsolete retraction of titles claim that renaming efforts would have afforded a smoother transition for servicemembers to the civilian job market and increased the effective accommodation by potential employers. However, thanks to the top brass, 241 years of tradition will be maintained.
According to an article on the US Naval Institute News site, the elimination of traditional ranks was spurred by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, with the clear goal of promoting diversity, or in the case of modern times, harnessing political correctness.
“The change comes as Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has pushed the Department of the Navy to create gender-neutral titles for positions like rifleman and motorman. Mabus’ request – examining how changing ratings like Yeoman, Legalman and Damage Controlman could better reflect the diversity of the service – was the genesis of the new policy, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said during a Thursday all-hands call explaining the changes.”
