A police officer in Milan, Italy fatally shot alleged Berlin “truck killer” Anis Amri, reinforcing the notion that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
About the same time that was happening, authorities in Australia were foiling a Christmas Day bomb plot that was reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group. Intended targets apparently included a train station in Melbourne, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and a “fashionable bar and restaurant precinct,” according to Fox News.
And this is supposed to be the season of Peace on Earth and good will toward men? Whatever happened to the spirit of the holiday, perhaps best exemplified in recent times by the late John Denver’s “Christmas for Cowboys?”
According to the Daily Mail, Amri was stopped by police for an identification check. Instead of handing them his ID, the suspected truck terrorist pulled a small semi-auto pistol from a backpack and shot one Italian cop in the shoulder. The officer’s partner, who has only a few months on the job, fired back, killing Amri.
An image of the terrorist lying dead on the pavement was the Drudge Report headliner for a while Friday morning.
The Sun has a story featuring videos of Amri allegedly pledging his allegiance to ISIS, the terrorist organization.
All of this is unfolding as Christmas Day looms this weekend. It appears that the inmates haven’t simply taken over the asylum, they’ve escaped.
Adding to the holiday madness was the story about two men who were booted off a Jet Blue flight because one of them had a problem with the presence of Ivanka Trump and her family on the same plane. According to NBC News, one of the men tweeted, after spotting Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, “My husband chasing them down to harass them #banalityofevil.” That tweet was later deleted, NBC reported.
Earlier this week, in an email blast from anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts alleged that the National Rifle Association wants the Trump administration to force guns onto school campuses and pass federal legislation that would make it legal for “dangerous people to carry hidden, loaded handguns anywhere in the country.”
Those “dangerous people” apparently are the 15 million-plus private citizens who have passed background checks and, in many cases, taken training courses to obtain concealed carry permits and licenses.
With all of this discontent, one wonders how anyone had time to do some Christmas shopping.
The holidays are supposed to be a time of sharing, not shouting. Christmas, especially, and then New Year’s Day, traditionally are times of brotherhood and hope.
This year, maybe people are simply hoping to get through the holidays in one piece.
