3D Holograms? Yes, The Future Is Bright

January 26, 2018 By Conn Williamson

When current technological innovations intersect with the expansive scope of imagination featured in science fiction movies and literature, it is cause for celebration and provides a needed escape from the crazed blathering noise of politics with even more opinions than the current daunting number of personal identifiers. In fact, the synergy between breakthrough discoveries and the deconstructions of social morays is quite apparent in branding cutting edge mechanisms. Thanks to this current age of whatever makes you feel good, yes, my friend that truly is a hologram of a guy who chooses to exist as a polygamist multi-sexual 2539 year-old iguana.

Oh, and don’t forget to pickup the crickets at the pet store for his dinner, along with a suitable bourbon. Just dial it up with the virtual reality interface.

“At that moment, when I had the TV sound off, I was in a 382 mood; I had just dialed it. So although I heard the emptiness intellectually, I didn’t feel it. My first reaction consisted of being grateful that we could afford a Penfield mood organ. But then I realized how unhealthy it was, sensing the absence of life, not just in this building but everywhere, and not reacting—do you see? I guess you don’t.” Philip K. Dick– Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep

Star Wars, meet Blade Runner. Blade Runner, meet Star Wars. The theoretical technology behind the classic scene ingrained in every teenagers head from the 70’s and 80’s of the breathtaking Princess Leia’s eerily life like recorded plea for the future of the revolution, her regal beauty enhanced by the male dominated and beastly creatures of Lucas’s universe, may soon be on the marketplace in the shelve space adjacent to Alexa.

MSN.com shares the news of a groundbreaking discovery by researchers at BYU in creating a true volumetric display (the fancy way of saying hologram), and life will never be viewed in the same way again. Apparently, the team of scientists was able to capture and manipulate small particles to create simple shapes. While the process has a long ways to go in attaining commercial viability and echoing the complexity of the human form, the initial framework for the development of the technology is solid. Other than the iconic popular culture representation of a souped up greeting card from the future, possible applications of complex holograms in the fields of medicine and engineering are extremely intriguing. Of course, the leadership in the taboo, but necessary world of human fulfillment, are anticipating the refinement of the technology, as with Playboy magazine gravitating completely away from the iconic centerfold, signifies an end to the classic era of men’s entertainment.

As the possibility of the laser lifelike marches towards the marketplace, the question remains, how much memory and energy is required to render each 3D image, and outside of the practical uses in healthcare and design, is the mass distribution of the technology logical?
