The Blunder Of A Generation- Why Does J.R. Smith Get A Pass?

June 3, 2018 By Conn Williamson

Professional basketball just devolved from unwatchable to an abomination after the forward from the Cleveland Cavaliers making only $12.8 per season committed one the most inexplicable high profile indiscretions and void of any critical thinking skills since Leon Lett’s duo of unforgettable gridiron mental errors, in failing to grasp that the game was tied at 107 and leading to an overtime loss in the NBA finals.

On a superficial level it’s simply a pure shame, because teammate and future hall of fame inductee Lebron James is an absolute magician of a rare talent and pure representation of a scholarly level of basketball IQ, in leading a roster of mediocre hacks to the championship series against the Golden State Warriors. In examining the athletic travesty more closely, the disappointing reality is that the typical apologists are out in full force in labeling Smith’s complete meltdown as an unfortunate “mistake” and indirectly blaming the President for one of the worst decisions in the history of professional sports. Once again, a minority is immune to criticism as the political correct locomotive forges onward in antithesis to progress, though the biting irony is that progressives believe in their proclivities towards reducing individual liberties, is somehow productive for the future prosperity of humanity.

Smith was able to corral a rebound after a missed free throw with 4.6 seconds remaining in the middle of the lane with Cleveland having a single timeout remaining. Instead of stopping play and giving his team the opportunity to draw up a play or attempting a mid range floater, the 6’6 wing made the mind numbing decision to dribble out past the three point line as James frenetically yelled in desperation for a pass or a timeout. In the aftermath of horrible play, Smith could be seen telling James, “I thought we were ahead.”

There is absolutely no room for the magnitude of Smith’s blunder on professional level and during the culmination of an 82 game regular season and the playoffs. The disconcerting theme throughout the analysis of the drama, is a complete lack of accountability or consequences for the blatant amateur actions. Besides the game changing antics of Smith, radio broadcasters Marc Kestecher and Hubie Brown embarrassingly blew the call in the final moments of the contest, with Kestecher actually apologizing to listeners for incorrectly announcing that there was a one point difference in the score.

While Smith ultimately apologized for his bone headed decision, in this society with a self-driving car mentality of “do what you want and then ask for forgiveness”, the empty gesture is about authentic as Samantha Bee’s disingenuous attempt to regain any semblance of credibility or attractiveness. Until criticism regains an equatable status, basic rights will remain threatened.
