The college football world is reeling from the news out of Charlottesville, VA, where there was a shooting last night, November 13, involving current and past members of the University of Virginia’s football team.
According to ESPN, police have arrested ex-Cavaliers player Chris Jones in connection with the shooting deaths of current Virginia players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. All three were juniors, with Davis and Chandler playing on the team as wide receivers as part of their offense and Perry playing as a defensive end and linebacker. Jones has been charged with three counts of murder and three weapons-related charges as a result of the alleged shootings.
School president Jim Ryan, in a news conference, also indicated two other students not affiliated with the team were shot in the incident but both survived and are in the hospital. One of those is in critical condition. The incident, according to Ryan, took place on a campus-chartered bus on the way back to the Virginia campus from an off-campus academic outing. News of the arrest, reported the sports television network, broke during that news conference with the school president, which caused the university’s police chief to briefly stop the proceedings before telling assembled media, “I just need a moment to thank God and breathe a sigh of relief.”
Jones, according to ESPN, played just one season with UVA, in 2018. He was not currently participating with the program even though he is still a student at the university.
