Survey Says: Trump’s ‘First Duty’ Remark Scored High with Voters

March 5, 2026 By Dave Workman

A new Rasmussen poll shows Donald Trump got high marks during his State of the Union speech for saying the first duty of government is to protect American citizens.

A new Rasmussen survey result, released this week, shows one of President Donald Trump’s comments struck a chord with more than two-thirds of likely voters.

In the process, he made Democrats looks foolish to the entire nation.

According to Rasmussen, 67 percent of voters agreed with President Trump when he observed, “The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” The remark was greeted with thundering applause from nearly everyone in the House chamber, where he delivered the State of the Union address, with one glaring exception. Democrats didn’t stand up when invited, and didn’t even applaud. It was a moment which will likely become a centerpiece of mid-term campaign advertising.

During the February 24 speech to a joint session of Congress, Trump asked members to stand if they agreed with his observation. The Democrats’ reaction was stunning.

Rasmussen noted that “Among voters who watched all of the State of the Union address, 71% rated Trump’s speech good or excellent.” Many conservative pundits said it was the best speech he had ever made.

Underscoring Democrats’ contempt for the president, Rasmussen revealed, “Only 30% of Democrats watched most or all of Trump’s State of the Union address and 45% of Democrats didn’t watch any of it.”

Further, the veteran polling firm reported how “Trump’s speech was rated good or excellent by 71% of Republicans, 15% of Democrats and 34% of” Independent voters.

On the other hand, the speech was rated poorly by 58 percent of Democrats but only 13 percent of Republicans. Forty percent of Independents gave the speech a poor rating.

A whopping 87 percent of Republicans, 49 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of Independent voters agree with the quote from Trump’s speech: “The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

The survey of 1,130 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on February 26 and March 1-2, 2026 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
