Bracketology- It’s Not Just About Basketball

March 12, 2018 By Conn Williamson

As the nation braces for the unavoidable reality of the most least productive non-holiday work week of the year, thanks to the bevy of March Madness basketball action for first round games of the NCAA tournament, Thursday and Friday, the feverish intensity of the inner office is focused on brackets.

And the beautiful nuance of the largest coordinated gambling operation in the free world is that no matter what level of fandom or expertise one possesses, the chances of picking the eventual champion are so miniscule, that the playing field is virtually even. Young- old, female or male, sophist- pacifist, everyone has a shot at the big money, and the methods for choosing winners makes for some hilarious intrigue. Tales of wives determining their bracket by going with their favorite mascots, or folks drawing teams at random from a hat, are legendary narratives of formulas for victory that will stand the test of time.

In recent years the concept of the bracket has extended beyond the realm of basketball and is utilized as a tool and a solid parody. SnapApp includes this fun read about how seeding and comparisons can visually illustrate various concepts. The most intriguing application of bracketology is to the innovative world of technology and the basis for artificial intelligence in providing a schematic for the foundation of the basic decision making process. In this case, the brackets would included hundreds of thousands of match-ups supplied with various data in housing the footprint of a mind. Another field where the technology would be applicable, is of course the cryptocurrency world and working with 64 character hashes and the framework of the blockchain. While Bitcoin and the countless other metaphors for money are focused on valuation, Ethereum and other data storage blockchain projects, combine science with mining operations, and provide an avenue for potential revenue, which is not directly linked to the volatile market.

Within the intrigue and leisurely workplace environment fast approaching at the end of the week, just realize that brackets are changing the landscape of the world outside of the basketball vortex, and it will help ease the pain of calling in sick to work, in witnessing the greatest tournament on earth.
