Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is joining the legal team representing President Donald Trump in the special counsel’s Russia investigation.The Washington Post reported that Giuliani announced:
“I’m doing it because I hope we can negotiate an end to this for the good of the country and because I have high regard for the president and for Bob Mueller.”
According to ijr.com:
In a statement released by Trump attorney Jay Sekulow, the president praised Giuliani’s decision and noted their close friendship.
“Rudy is great. He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country,” he said.
In addition to serving as the mayor of New York City, Giuliani has served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He was also a federal prosecutor in Manhattan in the 1980s.
New York attorney Steven Molo reportedly turned down an offer to join the president’s legal team just two days ago due to “a current conflict related to the investigation.”
President Trump has had difficulty finding lawyers to add to his team since the resignation of then-lead attorney John Dowd last month.
Since then, attorneys Tom Buchanan, Dan Webb, and former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson have all declined opportunities to represent the president in the investigation.
Joseph di Genova, an attorney who once alleged the Russia probe was an attempt by the FBI and Justice Department to frame Trump for crimes he did not commit, agreed to join the president’s legal team last month, but later retracted his commitment due to undisclosed conflicts.”
