The flight crew and the 141 people aboard a Peruvian Boeing 737 from Lima to Jauja experienced the full gamut terror of Tuesday, as the aircraft landed hard on the high elevation runway, prompting a complete collapse of the landing gear and resulted in the plane sliding off the runway and erupting into flames. Miraculously, there were not fatalities, though a number of passengers received medical attention, according to local authorities.
Traveler and YouTube user vivayoforeverandever was brave and skilled enough with a camera to capture the landing and the disastrous and terrifying moments of the failing landing gear, sending the aircraft into a perilous toboggan ride into nearby terrain. The investigation is still ongoing on what was the exact cause of the landing gear failure.
Jauja, located approximately 160 miles to the east of Peru’s capital Lima, is situated in an Andean Valley and the airport is just over 11,000 feet above sea level.
