WATCH: As These Batteries Get Their Groove On

November 6, 2017 By Conn Williamson

Not only are they more endearing than the annoying headache-inducing bunny rabbit hawking portable power products using a giant drum, the graceful battery powered angels of the DIY world also have the edge in overall stage talent.

Thanks to the exploits in experimentation from legendary scientist Michael Faraday (known for the highly secure “Faraday cage”), kids and adults can construct their own dancing batteries of all brand names at home, with the simplest of material combined with a wealth of patience.

The completed dancer, which consists of copper wire, a battery and a neodymium magnet (selected for its lively magnetic field), is actually an example of a homopolar motor. Faraday, who experimented with all types of electromagnetism, first discovered the concept in 1821. The fluid and flowing motion of the dancers are actually created by the direction of the magnetic field surrounding the battery being altered by the presence of the magnet. While highly impractical in real world applications, because of the gross inefficiencies in sustained performance, homopolar motors are a great project for the whole family in gaining an appreciation and understanding for the synergy between physics and geometry.
