What Happened To All Those CDs?

March 13, 2019 By Conn Williamson

The technological evolutionary pathway of musical mediums has reached a point of no return. As vinyl succumbed to the 8-track, which yielded to the cassette, opening up the door for the compact disk, and the graceful segue into the modern age of digital convenience and prosperity, the towering mountain ranges of shiny non-biodegradable material at the very least gave landfills a reflective character, a visual spectacle that has since retreated under a decade’s worth of detritus and the dinosaur generations of castaway devices.

American Online did their worst in flooding the postal service and consumers with a tidal wave of free CDs as the original online community and email service caused a ruckus and borderline environmental disaster thanks to the mirror like quality of the discs beaming the radiation of the sun back into outer space. But with the growing industry of environmental stewardship and climate idealism, what programs or recycling efforts have been implemented to counteract the aggressive marketing tactics of AOL? Fortunately, YouTube had the answer. Unfortunately, the reality is that very little ingenuity has been applied to reusing CDs in any sort of important role.

A great initial idea for recommission of the medium for online recruitment and “Best of” albums so tediously overplayed that the previous owner frisbee tossed the Los Del Rio compilation into the dumpster from 50 yards away, is within the construction industry and developing the waste as viable building materials, especially as an alternative to roofing or creating load bearing framework. But alas, virtual crickets.

In fact, a 30 minute search produced nothing of substance, outside of the hipster trendy world of DIY arts and craft projects, which was disappointing considering that the majority of those responsible for the CD invasion and landfill nightmare are steadfastly invested in the Green Movement.

If it’s any consolation, one can build a sleek and eclectic clock, which of course nobody under the age of 35 is able to process, as the concept of analog furtively retreats to the dark and ominous catacombs of the under appreciated and implied, a cruel and ironic fate for the workhorse of the electronic dreamland of the impossible reality.

Next up- How to ceremoniously manifest praise and encouragement in a transcendent means towards celebrities utilizing DVD skeet shooting performance art sessions.
