The St. Louis attorney who became famous last year following his use of a gun to defend his house from protesters is entering the political arena.
Mark McCloskey announced last night on national television his candidacy for U.S. Senate from Missouri. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, he made the announcement on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight” show. The incident in which he used his firearm to defend his house happened last June, amidst protests in St. Louis and across the United States after the George Floyd police shooting in Minneapolis. He and his wife Patricia have plead not guilty to charges stemming from the incident and the case has yet to go to trial.
McCloskey will be running as a Republican and the paper reported he is now the third announced GOP candidate seeking to fill the open seat being left by retiring U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, also a Republican.
McCloskey will be facing some significant opposition on the campaign trail. According to the Post-Dispatch, former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens along with the state’s current Attorney General, Eric Schmitt, have also entered their names into the race. Several Democrats, led by former state Senator Scott Sifton along with Air Force veteran Jewel Kelly have also announced their candidacies, the paper reported. The election for this seat will happen next year.
